Introduction
In the contemporary mindset, democracy is seen as the best form of government. Many people in the modern day can only envision the democratic process when contemplating an effective government. However, democracy has not always been present on earth, and has only been employed on a massive scale as recently as 200 years ago. This leads to the question: is democracy the only effective means of governing a people? The answer is no, as systems have proven their worth throughout history. Perhaps the greatest example is that of Rome, which transformed itself from some semblance of a democracy into a monarchical state that flourished for over 500 years. We can rethink the common stereotype of monarchies as tyrannical and essentially unsuccessful by examining Rome's transformation from a democracy to a monarchy. Thus, by examining Rome and her successes after monarchical rule, we can truly understand Roman progress in a new light, and see how the advent of the monarchy really did improve a nation.
Thesis Statement:
The Roman Republic took a revolutionary step towards empirical rule when Julius Caesar faced down all competition and declared himself ruler. In reaction to this monumental development, Caesar's bid for power was crushed as he was assassinated, and a new struggle for absolute power ensued. Finally, as Augustus Octavain was able to secure for himself complete control of the Roman state, he implemented well-thought-out reforms that were able to benefit the Roman nation. Truly, the transition from a republic to an empire may have been difficult for Rome, but it was a needed step, and the outcome of this period was a flourishing of Roman culture and prosperity for many centuries to come.
